Former National First Division (NFD) Coastal Stream leaders Maritzburg United now appear to be losing the battle for promotion after dropping three valuable points at the weekend.

The Team of Choice, relegated to the NFD this season, were surprised by struggling rookies Hanover Park, who beat them 2-1 at Vygieskraal Stadium in Cape Town.

The setback has dented their chances of qualifying for the promotion playoffs after pacesetters Bay United dimmed Durban Stars 3-0 in Port Elizabeth.

United's goals were scored by rightback Lizo Genu, forward Jimmy Zakazaka and midfielder Khayalethu Ngangqu to ensure the side coached by Vladislav Heric remain on top of the log.

They lead Maritzburg United by four points and all the teams in the NFD are left with four matches. Western Province United, the league's whipping boys, pipped homeboys Ikapa Sporting 2-1 at Erica Park Stadium.

WP United remain bottom of the log despite their success over Sporting and they are firm favourites to play in the Vodacom Promotional League next season.

A goal by Victor Ngunyule gave Witbank Spurs a slender but crucial 1-0 win over Inland Stream leaders FC AK in Eldorado Park on Saturday.

But Bahumi should take comfort from the fact that second-placed Dynamos failed to win as they fought out a 1-1 draw against basement club University of Pretoria in NkowaNkowa on Sunday.

The Dynamites trail FC AK by five points.
