Stars out at night

The fashion scales tipped to both the dazzling and the drab sides at the first annual Stars of Mzansi Awards on Friday night.

In the end there wasn't really much glamour and glitter to go around.

Simple shapes and bright colours were featured. And for men there were a lot of creams. Balloon-styled shimmering dresses and elegant black numbers were the order of the day, led by the nominated designers David Tlale and Asanda Madyibi.

Some ladies just snubbed the "Glam Mzansi Style" suggested. Instead they came in casual gear. While silver ruled on the red carpet, black was also prominent. But some stars went to the other extreme in white outfits and neutral colours.

Uyanda Mbuli, who usually dazzles, was a bit subdued, opting for a green number with not much candy. Miss South Africa Tansey Coetzee was hot and actress Sonia Sedibe looked too exquisite for someone who just had a baby. In fact, all the Generations girls were sizzling. Zukisa Matola's dress was a bit too much of show stopper. She looked like a bride.

Khanyisile Mbau was in her fashion element too. She even had a few photographers scrambling for her pictures though no one said animal prints are back. She did the red carpet without her favourite accessory, hubby Mandla Mthembu. Simphiwe Majola, Arthur Mafokate and KB also looked nice. But it was TK Nciza in a shiny cream suit and Kwela Tebza who were traffic-stoppers. Unathi Nkayi, Jeanne D and Pabi Moloi also dazzled.

Somizi Mhlongo and Amstel looked as if they had stepped off a space ship. For someone whose shopping sprees are announced on radio, I'm miffed that Mhlongo still manages to get it so wrong.

But it was Kelly Khumalo who made most people laugh. What was she doing in that curtain?

Bad Boy T didn't make an effort either. He looked like he was going to a church choir practice. Elana Afrika and Ntsiki Mazwai can share the worst- dressed award.

As for Kabonina Qubeka, what was she thinking in that hideous sequin dress?
