Even police officers are to help bolster the ongoing community-led campaign to highlight the futility and destructiveness of crime and criminality.
Members of the South African Police Service brass band in Mafikeng will lead a residents' march against crime in Mmabatho, North West, on March 29.
The march is part of the yearly Stop Crime Drama Festival that is being staged at the Mmabana Cultural Centre in Mmabatho over four days, starting on March 27.
This is a youth development project of the festival's producers and organisers, Dramatists Against Crime, and sponsoring and organising partners Absa, Sowetan and the North West sports, arts and culture department.
Professional actors have been assisting Dramatists Against Crime leaders Martin Koboekae and Julian Seleke Mokoto with auditions of up to 18 novice drama groups, which were held in Pretoria, Klerksdorp, Taung and Mmabatho between last Thursday and Saturday, as well as:
l Developmental theatre workshops aimed at preparing the qualifying groups' work for the festival.
These workshops will run between March 10 and 26;
l Open public theatre workshops at the Mmabana Cultural Centre in Mmabatho on March 27;
l The official launch of the 2008 Stop Crime Drama Festival on March 28;
l Stop Crime Drama Festival Community Anti-Crime March, led by the Mafikeng SAPS Brass Band, on March 29; and
l Performances for top honours by up to 18 amateur drama groups at the Mmabana Cultural Centre on March 29 and 30.
At the end of last month, the Dramatists Against Crime initiative received a boost when Absa donated R500000.
The donation was received by Julian Seleke Mokoto and North West arts and culture deputy director-general Irene Mpolweni.
