Menzi Ngubane emerged the over- all winner of the inaugural Stars Of Mzansi Awards held at the State Theatre in Tshwane on Friday night.

Ngubane had every reason to look like a cat that had swallowed a lot of cream, after all he had just hit a double header. Not only had he emerged as over-all winner, but he had also scooped Star Actor Award, beating hopefuls such as Robert Whitehead, Sello Maake ka Ncube and Zane Meas.

Looking chuffed and bathed in the afterglow of his fiancee, he kept on reminding her of his undying love. The thrilled Ngubane, who was clad in a striking black-and- white ensemble, took his time walking to the podium. He thanked the cast, crew, script- writers and his fiancee for their support , which had contributed to his bagging the sought-after the two awards and the cool R1 million prize money.

Brian Habana was the Sport star, the late Ashley Callie the Star Actress, Noleen Maholwane Sanqgu Star TV Presenter, Zola 7 Star Programme, HHP rapped his way through Music Star, while Tira spinned his fingers around Star Club DJ. David Tlale's designs won the Star Fashion Designer Award, David Kau tickled the public's funny bones to Star Comedian and DJ Sbu's Ezasekuseni on Ukhozi FM snatched the star Radio Breakfast Show.

Collaborations from seemingly non compatible genres was particularly fascinating.

Take ProKid and Parletones, RJ Benjamin and Malik, for instance. Loyiso Bala was a classy act on his own. DJ Cleo was the icing on the proverbial Mzansi Stars cake with his harem of beauties who, according to his hit song Ngihamba Nawe, were all so enamoured of charms they were going home with him.

Kagiso Lediga was a blast with his snide comments that kept the audience in stitches, helping everyone to cope with the production outages and continuity load sheddings that were the hallmark of the evening.

The inaugural Stars of Mzansi Awards evening was a success in unleashing a lot of unknown wannabes who enthusiastically rubbed shoulders with their celebs.

Ngubane will donate R500 000 to five charities of his choice in five of the country's nine provinces.
