Inspector Magezi Chauke said the 59-year-old pastor went to the Queenspark shop at Mabiligwe, near Malamulele, to buy an airtime voucher for his cellphone on Saturday. The shop is owned by two Somali nationals, both aged 22.
"A few hours later [about 5pm] he returned and complained that the airtime voucher was invalid. It's then that the fight started - the Somalis assaulted the pastor using fists and then a panga.
"He was assaulted several times with a panga and he [the pastor] grabbed the stick and retaliated and beat the men with it," said Chauke.
The pastor sustained serious injuries to the head and left elbow, while one of the shopkeepers sustained serious injuries to his head and body.
The pastor and shopkeeper were both in a serious condition at a local hospital, Chauke said.
The two have opened counter charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm against each other.
They were expected to appear in the Saselamani magistrate's court today, said Chauke. - Sapa
