Hundreds of women, who marched to the Noord Street taxi rank in protest against recent attacks on women in miniskirts ,were met by angry taxi drivers who stripped naked in retaliation.
The women's organisations included Remmoho Women's Forum, 9-in-1 and Earthlife.
In a memorandum handed to the police to pass on to taxi bosses, the women demanded an end to assaults at the rank and that perpetrators be charged with rape. They also want a code of conduct for taxi ranks and the removal of "disgusting and demeaning" stickers in taxis.
Three weeks ago Nwabisa Ngcukana, 25, was attacked and sexually assaulted at the rank.
A week ago Nondumiso Ngcukayithobi was smacked on the buttocks by a queue marshal. Ngcukana and Ngcukayithobi have since laid charges.
No one has been arrested despite Gauteng community safety MEC Firoz Cachalia saying that the perpetrators would be caught with the help of taxi owners.
On Friday Noord Street taxi drivers demanded that the women disperse. Then they started singing Awuleth' Umshini wami.
"Just walk away from our rank, you prostitutes!" one taxi driver screamed.
They waved money at the women who exposed their thighs and breasts as they sang, asking them mockingly, "How much?"
The drivers stripped naked, exposing their private parts.
Police had to form a human wall between the drivers and the women during the heated exchange of words.
"We just want them to stop undermining women. It is time that the law takes its course," said Nosipho Twala of the Remmoho Women's Forum.
