Mpumalanga police have arrested five of their colleagues for rape and attempting to defeat the ends of justice.
The five constables stationed at Kriel police station have been charged with statutory rape, attempting to defeat the ends of justice, corruption and intimidation.
Constables Sipho Nkuna, 25, Sanyama Lucas Mtshweni, 27, Phema Kganyago, 33, Lindzimpi Richard Mahlalela, 33, and Mzilikazi Godfrey Mhlari, 35, were arrested on Friday morning. They appeared in court later on the same day.
According to police spokesman Superintendent Abie Khoabane the girl, who is now 14 and in Grade 8 at a local school, has been raped by the constables since 2006.
Khoabane said some of the policemen arrested had helped conceal the rape involving their colleagues.
They are alleged to have started raping a 12-year-old girl in 2006 when she went to the police station to report a case of domestic violence involving her parents.
Policemen pretending to be helping her then started raping her.
They took turns to summon her to the police station, where she was allegedly raped continuously.
Khoabane said the policemen allegedly promised to deal with the case if she had sex with them.
The five will again appear in court next Tuesday, when they will apply for bail.
