Johannesburg City Power and Eskom yesterday unveiled a timetable of possible four-hour power blackouts to help customers plan better ahead of load shedding.

City Power director of engineering operations Vally Padayachee said: "This is not the first plan. We first signed the plan in May 2007 and we had to change it because from October and November we experienced intense power cuts.

"With the current plan we will move from having two-and-a-half- hour blackouts to four-hour blackouts at least twice a week."

He said that with the current outages timetable, customers would have a high degree of certainty about when their area would have power cuts and therefore plan better.

The timetable will be implemented from March 1 and divides the city into blocks and sets out the times when power cuts would occur.

The timetable has set power outages for the Johannesburg CBD for between 2pm to 6pm.

Louis Pieterse, general manager of supply availability for City Power, said: "This means that on days that there are power outages, businesses will have to start work earlier and finish earlier to escape the evening traffic build up."
