High school pupils will soon compete for spots in the national finals of the Anglo American and Sowetan Young Communicators Awards.

This popular nation-building project, held in all nine provinces to help pupils to become public speakers, is open for participants in grades 11 and 12 for whom English is a second language.

Each entrant has to give a prepared speech and a short, impromptu speech. Elimination rounds are held in each province.

The provincial heat is scheduled for Johannesburg on Saturday March 1 then:

lKimberley, Northern Cape, on March 8;

l Worcester, Western Cape, on March 15;

l Bloemfontein, Free State, on April 19;

l Polokwane, Limpopo, on May 3;

l East London, Eastern Cape, on May 10;

l Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, on May 17;

l Mmabatho, North West, on May 24;

l Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, on May 31.

The finals will be held in Johannesburg on June 14.
