The Mpumalanga community, local government and local business sector are expected to come together again for the third consecutive year to save lives during the Easter holidays.
The annual Radio Kragbron Easter weekend Helicopter Rescue Project was started in 2005 as a unique initiative by community radio station Radio Kragbron in Witbank.
The project provides free medical assistance at the scene of an accident and has more than 100 rescue personnel based at the headquarters at the Middelburg toll plaza every day.
According to Hennie Smit, project leader and station manager, the initiative focuses on increasing public awareness about road safety and crime prevention.
Smit said services involved in the 2008 project include LangaMed Private Ambulance Services, Midmed Ambulance Services, Life Healthcare Cosmos Hospital, Pegasus Tyres, Middelburg and Witbank Ambulance Services, police and traffic services and the fire brigade.
The initiative involves the Mpumalanga traffic department, the accident response unit of the Trans African Concessions group, TRAC Assist, the SAPS and the Mpumalanga critical call unit.
Smit said because of the project's success over the past two years and an increasing public demand, this year's project will also encompass the Easter weekend from March 20 to March 25.
"The project will provide services to road users on the N4 highway on a 200km stretch between the Balmoral off-ramp and Machadodorp toll plaza and also between Sundra and the Machadodorp toll plaza.
"We will also provide services to road users on the N11," said Hester Arlow of Radio Kragbron.
