Isabel le Roux believes she has a good chance of qualifying for the Beijing Olympics in the 200m event at the Yellow Pages Series in Oudtshoorn, Western Cape, tomorrow.
The much-improved Le Roux ran a lifetime best of 23,5 seconds in the fourth leg of the series in Germiston last weekend. The final leg of the series, which is a qualifying event for the Olympics, will be held in Tshwane on March 7.
Despite clocking a good time last weekend, Le Roux must still achieve the more demanding A qualifying standard to book a berth at the Olympics in August.
Le Roux says she would have been happy to compete against 100m and 200m national champion Geraldine Pillay tomorrow, but Pillay withdrew from the meeting because of a slight injury.
"My wish was to compete with Pillay because I think she would push me to qualify for the Olympic Games. I have a better chance of qualifying for Beijing in the 200m event and I will work hard to realise my goal in the series," said Le Roux, who was raised in Oudtshoorn.
Her training partner, Hannes Dreyer, aims to repeat his dominance of the men's 100m and 200m events tomorrow.
Commonwealth Games champion Louis van Zyl is also tipped to qualify for the Olympics in the 400m hurdles tomorrow. But he will be under pressure from the likes of compatriot Alwyn Myburgh and Mozambican Kurt Couto.
Hezekiel Sepeng, the 1996 Olympic 800m silver medallist, is making a return to top-flight athletics. Sepeng took part in the 800m B race last weekend as Mbulaeni Mulaudzi and Samson Ngoepe booked their tickets to Beijing.
"I preferred to start slowly last weekend but I believe I'm in a better frame of mind to run hard in the main race," said Sepeng who will compete in Oudtshoorn.
The Phalula twins, Lebo and Leboha get their best chance to qualify in the women's 800m.
