BEIJING - UK Foreign Secretary David Miliband said he raised human rights in talks with China's leaders yesterday, but insisted the sensitive issue should not interfere with the Beijing Olympics.

"No opportunity has been wasted either on this visit in general or during our meetings this morning . to raise the issue of human rights," Miliband said after meeting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi.

He repeated comments made in Hong Kong earlier this week that the Olympics should not be used to pressure Beijing over its human rights record.

"The Olympics are an opportunity to celebrate the progress achieved in China," he said. - Sapa-AFP
