Soccer teams that played in the annual Development Bank of South Africa (DBSA) industrial league's Enoch Kegakilwe Charity Soccer Challenge have the right to beam with pride.
The initiative, which honours the bank's soccer team leader and committed community builder Enoch Kegakilwe, who died in 2005, featured more than 20 male and female soccer teams who took part in the five-a-side soccer tournament in Johannesburg in June last year.
The tournament, which supports the ideals of the Let's Play campaign, which is also supported by the City of Johannesburg and Diepsloot Sports Forum, has helped raise money for good causes in poor communities.
Some of the money went to help sport development in Diepsloot, north of Johannesburg, home to more than 150000 people, while the Alexandra community development also received a cash boost.
The Diepsloot Sports Forum has been given sports equipment, while Banakekeleni Hospice in Alexandra received office equipment that included fax machines, a gas stove and a payphone shop complete with pay phones.
Another beneficiary was the Alexandra Outreach Centre, which runs a day care centre for orphaned children. It received classroom furniture. All this was made possible by the money raised by the DBSA Enoch Kegakilwe Charity Soccer Challenge, and from the DBSA CEO's Social Responsibility Fund. Other recipients will be identified by the respective organisations.
lSowetan and the DBSA also sponsor and organise the National Schools Essay Competition on Albinism, together with the Albinism Society of South Africa and the departments of health and of education. Sowetan views the tournament as an additional activity of its Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation.
