Mpumalanga finance MEC Mmathulare Coleman has demanded an investigation into where and how the Democratic Alliance obtained an internal e-mail reflecting irregularities in last year's grade 12 results.
Coleman said Premier Thabang Makwetla and MEC for education Siphosizwe Masango should establish the origins of the e-mail and how it landed into the DA's hands.
Speaking during the debate on Makwetla's state of the province address, Coleman said the fact that the DA had the e-mail raised serious questions about the government's information technology (IT) security system.
Makwetla and Masango appeared shocked and clueless when the DA leader read the e-mail to legislature members.
It appears neither Makwetla nor Masango were aware of the e-mail until the DA's revelation.
The DA said the e-mail, sent between two departmental officials, confirmed the party's suspicions that serious irregularities and discrepancies existed in last year's Grade 12 results.
The e-mail was an admission that the results were released before the rest of the results.
The DA yesterday submitted questions to Masango about the legislature's parliamentary procedures, prompting the MEC to respond to this issue.
The aim of the questions was to determine the extent of the MEC's knowledge about the content and origins of the e-mail, and whether or not an investigation was underway to determine the implications of the admissions on the credibility of the results.
"We assure the public that we will cooperate with any investigation in this regard and are prepared to disclose how the e-mail came into our possession," said DA spokesman Anthony Benadie.
