Mole report 'leaked to media'

The Special Browse "Mole" Consolidated Report, dated December 2006, was leaked to the media last year.

It was surreptitiously left at the Cosatu offices in Braamfontein and some officials of the organisation then leaked it to the media. The report claimed that ANC president Jacob Zuma was being bankrolled by African leaders, including Muammar Gaddafi of Libya and Angola's president Eduardo dos Santos, to topple President Thabo Mbeki.

The report claimed that these leaders provided funding to promote street-level revolution in support of Zuma. The report claimed that SACP general secretary Blade Nzimande served as a conduit for the funding.

The SACP subsequently confirmed that Nzimande had led a delegation to Libya in 2005 and the existence of a bank account mentioned in the report, but stressed that neither had anything to do with Zuma or fund-raising.

The report also alleged that former SANDF head Siphiwe Nyanda had met other African leaders who had pledged support, including military support, for Zuma. The ministry of intelligence rejected the report, claiming that it was the work of agents who wanted to sow division within the ANC. - Sapa
