LOC inspired by praise

Fifa's thumbs up for the World Cup progress has inspired the 2010 Local Organising Committee.

Fifa's thumbs up for the World Cup progress has inspired the 2010 Local Organising Committee.

Dennis Mumble, the LOC's general manager, said comments by the Fifa technical committee will encourage them to work harder.

"We are doing very well in terms of stadium delivery for both the [2009] Confederations Cup and World Cup," Mumble said.

"There are some challenges at all the venues, but we are closely monitoring developments on a regular basis so that we remain well on track.

"In Nelspruit the construction of Mbombela Stadium is eight weeks behind schedule but they have promised to catch up in three to four weeks." Mumble said.

The delays in Mbombela were as a result of a series of strikes by workers on site, who were demanding better pay.

The Fifa delegation was in the country last week for seven days to inspect the progress of host cities inland.

The focus was more on next year's Confederations Cup, a 16-country competition used by Fifa as a dress rehearsal for the World Cup.

Speaking at the end of their tour, Ron DelMont, Fifa head of the inspection, said they were impressed with the general progress in South Africa.

The delegation inspected the venues in Polokwane (Peter Mokaba), Nelspruit (Mbombela), Johannesburg (Ellis Park), Rustenburg (Royal Bafokeng), Free State (Bloemfontein) and Pretoria (Loftus).

DelMont went on to praise the provincial governments for their hands-on approach in all the projects relating to the World Cup.

The inspection of the venues at the coast was made by Fifa in October last year.
