In Zim, better the devil you know

Recent developments in Zimbabwe continue to dispel the media's notion that President Robert Mugabe only remains in power by rigging national elections, violence and political intimidation.

Recent developments in Zimbabwe continue to dispel the media's notion that President Robert Mugabe only remains in power by rigging national elections, violence and political intimidation.

It is clear that Morgan Tsvangirai's lust for money and power is the reason why vigilant Zimbabweans stay with the devil they know.

The once-hailed MDC was split into two factions a few years ago when Tsvangirai refused to contest parliamentary elections.

When Simba Makoni joined the presidential race and suggested a coalition against Zanu-PF, Tsvangirai accused him of being "an old wine in a new bottle".

Isn't this a sign of a dictator in the making?

With the opposition divided into three factions, Mugabe needs little effort and resources, let alone rigging or violence, to win the march 29 elections.

The media cannot continue to deny that Mugabe stays in power because of people like Tsvangirai, who misleads everyone except the country's voters.

Tsvangirai is a liability and the sooner he goes the better.

Like Cuba's Fidel Castro, Mugabe will be the second world leader who, despite the West's wishes, will only leave office when he is nice and ready.
