Eight people, including a driver, were killed and two others sustained serious injuries during a collision between a minibus taxi and a bus on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast yesterday.

The two injured passengers were airlifted to local hospitals.

Rescue workers had to use the jaws of life to remove passengers who were trapped in the minibus taxi.

The dead and injured were passengers in the minibus taxi.

The department of transport said preliminary reports revealed that the driver of the bus was trying to overtake a car when his vehicle collided head-on with the minibus taxi.

Meanwhile, acting MEC for transport Lydia Johnson has urged public transport operators to be more cautious on the roads.

"Value the fact that you are not only carrying passengers but that you are carrying families and breadwinners."

Police spokesman Captain Vincent Pandarum said of the 10 people in the minibus taxi, including its driver, only two survived.

Pandarum said they remain in a critical condition in hospital.

He said police were investigating eight counts of culpable homicide.

"The driver of the bus and his only passenger were not injured," Pandarum said.

He said the driver of the bus had not yet been charged and that investigations into the cause of the head-on collision were proceeding.
