Five foreigners were arrested in Johannesburg and surrounding areas on Monday for fraud and possession of fraudulent documents, Metro police said.

Inspector Edna Mamonyane, pictured, said police were called by the Diepsloot Absa branch after a man tried to open a bank account using a fraudulent ID.

When police arrested the man he referred them to the person he claimed had made the document for him. This second man was arrested after he was telephoned and directed police to his work place.

"We ended up arresting a total of five men in connection with the scam. The five were arrested in Diepsloot, Berea, and Park Station," she said.

The five suspects were a Nigerian, a Ghanaian, a Zimbabwean, a Zambian and an Angolan.

When police arrested the men, they found in their possession many documents, including IDs, passports, marriage certificates, visas, asylum seekers documents, cheque books and different stamps from Home Affairs. - Sapa
