Audi's queen of the SA roads came our way over the past two weeks for a road test and this resulted in certain people speculating that it was stolen.
They even asked the police to check if it was indeed a "straight car". Somebody out there with a twisted brain thinks I deal in stolen cars. The R8 is the type of car that brings all sorts of situations your way.
As a black motoring journalist you get suspicious looks from neighbours who think you deal in stolen vehicles.
Interesting theory, right.
I'm stating all this because the R8 made certain people very angry and bitter.
The Audi R8 is the most stunning vehicle around. I've even dubbed it "car of the decade".
After seven days of fun, the R8 finally went back to Audi SA where it belongs.
I have seen people drool over cars before but this was different. I witnessed lips dropping, eyes popping out and cellphones working as people took pictures everywhere this stunner went.
You could not miss the R8. It made the sound of a king from a distance. It told everybody that it was there and controlled the road.
The R8 was indeed an eye-opener because it has made me realise that there are people out there who think others don't deserve the good things in life.
Nevertheless, I fully enjoyed taking the R8 through its paces on Gauteng roads on quiet Sunday mornings.
The R8 is at the pinnacle of design and engineering - a car that takes Audi beyond the norm.
With a high-revving 309kW, mid-mounted V8 FSI engine, quattro permanent all-wheel drive and Audi's aluminium space frame construction, the R8 brings the right credentials to the party.
The wide, full shape of the R8 seems to hug the road. It demonstrates its potential through its imposing proportions, accentuated wheel arches and substantial air apertures.
The R8 is undeniably first and foremost an Audi, not just because of the characteristic single-frame grille at its front end.
The passion expressed through the elaborate design of the lights is another typical Audi trait.
The R8 already acquires an unmistakable frontal aspect through the standard bi-xenon headlights and daytime running lights comprising twelve light-emitting diodes - day and night alike. Nor is anyone likely to overlook this Audi sports car from behind.
The R8 is capable of sprinting from 0-100km in less than five seconds without any problems.
This car holds the road well iunder any condition, thanks to the quattro drive system.
The sound of a sports car's engine has to be electrifying. Every movement of the accelerator and every change in engine speed must be accompanied by a powerful change in sound that does not merely reflect the engine's performance and power flow, but also reinforces how these are perceived.
In contrast to the sound of the engine, other driving noises (wind, tyres) should keep a lower profile. Sports car drivers also want to arrive relaxed and refreshed after a long, high-speed stretch of freeway.
Audi's Greg Levin was right when he said this was "indeed Vorsprung's finest hour".
The manual R8 retails for R1,255 million, while the R-tronic costs R1,3 million. No wonder my neighbours called the police.
