Manuel disproves critics

Well done Trevor Manuel. Before Polokwane, Manuel and Thabo Mbeki were labelled capitalist agents accused of pushing the Washington consensus and branded enemies of the poor.

Well done Trevor Manuel. Before Polokwane, Manuel and Thabo Mbeki were labelled capitalist agents accused of pushing the Washington consensus and branded enemies of the poor.

Manuel's Budget has demonstrated the opposite and continues to favour poor people. Even Jacob Zuma and Gwede Mantashe praised it, though some people slaughtered the truth. ANC policies remain correct and relevant.

Zwelinzima Vavi wants the government to use the country's surplus to create jobs, increase social spending and increase grants. If we do that, South Africa will go the route of Zimbabwe. Vavi's proposal must be rejected because it lacks merit and good planning.

For government to spend money, public servants, including Cosatu members, must work like "business unusual". Every Sadtu, Nehawu/Denosa, Popcru and Samwu member must deliver in their respective jobs.

While the country builds reserves, we are increasing our social spending. If we want to speed up delivery, we cannot erode our reserves. This wise policy must continue even in the post-Mbeki government . We should not allow Vavi to dictate incorrect policies to the ANC.

Also, if we want to ensure that the Budget is utilised efficiently, Cosatu members must defeat corruption. Solidarity must be displayed during strikes, but also against corruption.
