Blitz on farm labour laws

Limpopo farms will be in the spotlight this week with labour inspectors embarking on an inspection mission in the agricultural sector to determine the level of compliance with labour laws.

This comes after a joint operation involving labour inspectors, the Department of Home Affairs, the Human Rights Commission and the police, netted farmers for contravening the law and operating "an illegal recruitment ring" in Musina last week.

Department spokesman Zolisa Sigabi, pictured, said the focus of the intensive inspection campaign will be on all applicable labour laws regulating conditions of employment and the determination of the minimum wage, with an objective of fostering sound labour relations in the sector.

About 325 farms will be inspected throughout the province and will be monitored. Last week the department found that some farmers were paying their workers as little as R105 a month.
