U-17 league to be unveiled

South African Football Association (Safa) Soweto are introducing new development competitions, which will also include Orlando Pirates and Bidvest Wits.

Philly "Chippa" Mogodi, Safa Soweto president, yesterday confirmed that they will unveil the Under-17 League in the next two weeks.

"We have decided to start an Under-17 League for our clubs. The initial plan was to include the four Premiership clubs who originate from Soweto.

"The four clubs are Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs, Jomo Cosmos and Moroka Swallows. However, other clubs with development programmes urged us to consider them too.

"SuperSport United and Wits also pleaded with us to accommodate their youngsters, the Transnet Football School of Excellence are also coming on board.

"It will consist of 16 clubs," said Mogodi, adding all the participating clubs will meet at Safa Development Centre in Klipspruit tomorrow at.

The top Soweto amateur clubs, who will be part of the new league include Mike Ntombela's Senaoane Gunners, Zola Lazio and Dlamini X1 Experience.

"The new league will start on March 2.

"We are still engaged in negotiations with two major companies to finance it.

"The majority of Premiership clubs also feel that we should add the Under-13s, 15s and 19s. We will table their request on Saturday."
