A Soweto family is seeking answers from the Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital about how a relative ended up dead and with a leg missing.
Patrick Nkosi, 61, of White City Jabavu was admitted to the hospital on February 8 with an abscess in the middle of his buttocks.
The family wants to know why his left leg was amputated at the hip and why there was a gaping hole in his stomach.
The hospital has failed to provide an explanation of the real cause of Nkosi's death.
Nkosi died on February 9 and was buried on February 16 in Avalon Cemetery.
"We were not told what happened and we were not informed about his condition," said his grieving son Linda.
"We were shocked to arrive at the government mortuary to find him without a left leg. He also had a gaping hole in his stomach,"
He said when they asked the questions at the hospital they were told to contact the Diepkloof police station.
"It hurts so much because we don't know the truth about what caused my father's death," Linda said. " It would have been better had the hospital told us that his leg had been amputated.
"The postmortem results we received showed that my father died from terminal multi-organ failure.
"The man had an abscess in his buttocks. What did the doctors want in his stomach? Why didn't they stitch him up? The hospital was negligent."
Diepkloof police spokesman Captain Phephi Matlou could not explain why an investigating officer had not visited the Nkosi family's home as indicated by the nurses.
Hospital spokesman Hester van der Heever said the clinical director had been asked to to launch an investigation.
She said the hospital was not allowed to disclose information about patients' records since these were considered confidential.
