Thirty enthusiastic cyclists are taking part in a 21-day charity tour from Beitbridge in Musina, Limpopo, to Cape Town to raise funds for children living with life-threatening diseases across the country.
The tour is staged by the Louis Trichardt-based P and L Hardware Cycling Club, in conjunction with Reach for a Dream Foundation, the non-governmental organisation that caters for affected children.
The money that will be raised will benefit the children. The cyclists, who started their adventure on Saturday, will cover a distance of 2 100km and are expected in the Mother City on March 6.
They cover an average distance of 150km a day and by 1pm yesterday they were passing Hammanskraal for a stopover in Pretoria.
The cyclists are mainly from Limpopo, but there are a few from Pretoria and one from Egypt.
Johan van Dijkhorst, the event organiser, said they had raised close to R50000 since the race started on Saturday.
"We are not aiming for a specific amount because we will be happy with what we get at the end of the tour. We will not dictate to people on how much they should donate," Dijkhorst said.
"It is the first time that we stage such a tour. It will depend on the sponsors.
"The children who will benefit are those who are suffering from diseases such as cancer and HIV/Aids."
The cyclists will also compete in the Cape Argus Cycle Race in Cape Town two days.
