Three taxis parked at a petrol service station were washed out of an undercover parking area by heavy rains that wreaked havoc in many parts of the greater Durban area on Tuesday.

Taxi operators leave their minibuses parked at the service station in Redhill, north of Durban, after a day's work.

They park their taxis at the garage overnight for safety reasons.

The taxis were washed out of the undercover parking into a river stream leading to the Umngeni River.

Metro police spokesman Superintendent Thozamile Tyala said the incident happened after 4am.

"The taxis were washed away into the Umhlali river stream after heavy rains last night," he said.
