A 30-year-old female security guard and a suspected robber were killed in two separate shoot-outs in Johannesburg yesterday.
In the first incident, three Bramley police officers, one of them a female, became suspicious when they saw a BMW dropping off three men at the corner of Corlett Drive and Louis Botha.
When the officers approached the men, they started firing at the police.
"Police fired back and one of the alleged robbers was shot dead. The female officer was shot once in the left leg and is in a stable condition in hospital," said Bramley police spokesman Inspector Moses Maphakela.
He said the two officers, Sergeant Simon Lamola and Constable Julius Khalo overpowered the other two men and arrested them at the scene.
The shoot-out occurred between 10am and 11am.
Two unlicensed 9mm pistols were confiscated during the arrest.
Maphakela said they believed the men were on their way to rob businesses in the area.
The two men, aged 21 and 25, will appear in the Johannesburg magistrate's court on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms, ammunition and attempted murder, said Maphakela.
In the other incident, a 30 year-old female security guard was shot and killed while her female colleague was injured while on duty at High Point shopping centre in Hillbrow, Johannesburg.
Police spokesman Bhekizizwe Mavundla said the incident was not a robbery but a hit.
"The suspects went into the centre knowing that their two targets were there and started shooting at the them," said Mavundla.
Two males, aged 19 and 20 were arrested and are likely to be charged with murder, attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
"They were arrested with the help of the community."
