When he was young, Obed Zwelani Dumane vowed that he would not work for a "white man" when he completed his studies. And he kept his word right to the end of his life.
He had always been business-minded, selling almost anything - shirts, trousers, chocolates, juice, peanuts and cold drinks - to make a living in the townships.
Dumane, 40, died after a long illness at his home in White City Jabavu on Sunday. He had been in and out of the Rand Mutual Hospital in Johannesburg.
He was an active businessman who believed in himself. He did not believe in hand-outs or being a hanger-on. He was a hard worker, a reliable and honest person.
When his business grew, he moved out of the township and found a suitable place near the Pat Mbatha highway which he turned into his business premises.
This is where he made lasting friendships with a lot of people he came into contact with. He won a lot of customers among taxi drivers, taxi owners as well as passengers. And he enjoyed his job and always served with a smile.
Dumane was born in White City Jabavu on December 19 1968. He went to Itekeng Primary School and later to Donaldson Higher Primary School.
He enrolled for his secondary and high school certificates at Morris Isaacson High.
Dumane, who is survived by his mother, a brother, two sisters and five children, will be buried at the Avalon Cemetery tomorrow.
The service will be held at the Bible School in White City Jabavu from 7am and the cortege leaves for the cemetery at 9am.
