Two teenagers died at the hands of angry residents who cornered them after they had allegedly stolen household items in Mpumalanga yesterday morning.
The teenagers, aged 18 and 19, who had not been identified by yesterday afternoon, were killed with an assortment of objects including sticks and stones at Newskom Trust, near White River.
Members of the community first had a meeting on Tuesday night where they agreed to track the "thieving" teenagers the following day.
The teenagers were fetched from their homes before being taken to an open field where they were attacked and killed.
KaBokweni police spokesman, Constable Muzi Ngomane, told Sowetan that an anonymous caller informed them about the teenagers' bodies in the field.
"We rushed to the scene and discovered the two bodies. There was no one at the scene," said Ngomane.
Police investigations led to the arrest of a man who was found a short distance from the scene. Police believe he will be able to shed light on the incident.
Meanwhile, members of the nearby community of KaNyamazane township are said to be also on a witch hunt for three suspected thieves who have allegedly broken into houses and stolen goods over a long period.
A community meeting was held at the township's Spot 5 section on Tuesday evening after which residents went to the homes of the suspects but did not find them.
Police have requested members of the community not to take the law into their own hands.
