A 40-year-old man allegedly raped a woman twice and thene fell asleep. So she locked him in the room and ran to call for help.

Eric Jerome Banda, who appeared in the Umzinto magistrate's court in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday, was still snoring when police arrived to arrest him.

Police said the woman, 24, was asleep at her house in Malandeni on Saturday night when she heard noises coming from the toilet.

Captain Vincent Pandarum said that she then saw the accused, who was already inside the house.

"Apparently he had entered through the toilet window. He threatened her with a knife and raped her," Pandarum said.

After the first rape, the suspect fell asleep and the woman got hold of the knife and tried to stab him, but he woke up and overpowered her.

"During the scuffle, they both fell on the ground and the suspect managed to throttle and assault her.

"He again forced himself on her and raped her for the second time," Pandarum said.

But the alleged rapist fell asleep again. This time the woman was able to take his clothes and knife, lock him in the room and run to the neighbours for help.

Banda will appear in the Umzinto magistrate's court again on Monday.
