Two schoolboys have been arrested and three others are still on the run after a fight over a girl resulted in the death of a schoolboy.

Pupils at Nkonka High School in Murchison, Port Shepstone, south of Durban, are refusing to attend classes because they say one of the teachers at the school is involved in the murder of a boy from the school at the weekend.

The pupils were demanding that the teacher be fired, claiming that the teacher was a friend of the pupils who had been arrested. Teachers had to be escorted out of the school for their safety.

Classes were suspended for the day and pupils sent home. Learning had not yet returned to normal yesterday.

Police were at the school to monitor the situation.

Police spokesman Vincent Mdunge said according to police investigations two groups of boys from the school had a fight over one of the boy's girlfriends.

"It appears that one of the female pupils was seen by her boyfriend walking with three other boys. The boyfriend and his friends attacked the three guys and beat them up. One boy was killed," he said.

"The girl was also seen in a minibus owned by one of the teachers at the school."

But the community told police that the teacher had given the girl a lift in good faith and was not linked with the incident at all Mdunge said.

He said that on Monday two boys were arrested and three were still on the run.

Police have not revealed the name of the dead boy.

He said their investigations had proved that the teacher had nothing to do with the killing.

Department of education spokesman Ntokozo Maphisa said officials and the school governing body were at the school yesterday trying to resolve the situation.
