Edward Mpofu has sworn to silence critics who wrote his obituary last November after he was outpointed by SA featherweight champion Ludumo Galada.
Mpofu, the former national junior featherweight champion, who is known as "Spoiler" for his awkward and boring style of fighting, said winning the Gauteng provincial title next Friday night will indicate that he is still alive as a fighter. Mpofu, whose aptitude is perfected by George Khosi in Hillbrow, will take on Marcel Japhta at Lenasia's Finetown Community Centre.
"Japhta won't last six rounds," vowed Mpofu. "He is still wet behind his ears."
Mpofu, 35, is a veteran who has been around since 1998, while Japhta, 25, turned professional in 2006.
Mpofu has been to wars with Patrick Malinga, Vuyisile Tinga, Luigi Castiglione, Takalani Ndlovu and Malcolm Klassen, while Japhta has not fought big-name fighters.
But Japtha, known as "Lights Out" because of the manner in which he knocked out six of his eight victims, has shown flashes of a great future.
He holds the BSA 2006 Baby Champs belt. Japhta, whose skills are honed at Westside Boxing Academy in Westbury by Benny Pailman, Peter Favor and Cliff Martins, boasts six knockouts against a loss and a draw.
The charismatic youngster carries hopes of Coloureds who ares scrambling to produce quality fighters. His 10-rounder with Mpofu will be the main supporting bout to the clash for the vacant SA cruiserweight title between Thabiso Mchunu and Patrick Madzinga.
Mchunu, 19, from Duran, is the Mike Tyson look-alike who was edged out by Chris van Heerden in the race for the Prospect of 2007 last week.
Mchunu is another champion in the Baby Champ 2007 programme.
He will oppose Madzinga, 36, a washed up fighter from the Western Cape who has never won any silverware since making his debut on May 15 1994.
