A man and woman are in a critical condition in hospital after their vehicle was riddled with 24 bullets yesterday in Bellair near Durban.

Unknown gunmen surrounded the car and fired a burst of bullets at them.

The man, Donovan Pillay, 26, was airlifted to Albert Luthuli Hospital in a critical condition, having sustained five gunshot wounds.

His cousin's wife, Leeann Armugam, was taken to the Chatsmed Garden Hospital.

Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said both victims were in a critical condition in hospital.

Police said the motive for the shooting had not been established.

Police spokesman Daniela Veldhuizen said Pillay had been transporting Armugam to work. They were waiting at the intersection of Stella and Fourth avenues, outside a primary school, when the incident happened.

Veldhuizen said the identity of the gunmen who approached the car had not been established and they were still on the run.

"Witnesses said two vehicles came from behind and another came from the side and opened fire."
