Class of '96 roped in to trumpet World Cup

The Eastern Cape department of sport, recreation, arts and culture has roped in the Bafana Bafana Class of 1996 to help in creating awareness of the 2010 World Cup.

The Eastern Cape department of sport, recreation, arts and culture has roped in the Bafana Bafana Class of 1996 to help in creating awareness of the 2010 World Cup.

Some members of the team that won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations will be in King Sabatha Dalindyebo municipality for a game with an Eastern Cape Invitation side on March 1.

The match, in which former Bush Bucks captain Fezile Momo will lead the local team, has been organised by the Eastern Cape 2010 World Cup unit.

The big names who will be in the Class of '96 include Doctor "16V" Khumalo and Philemon "Chippa" Masinga.

The duo will also attend a media briefing in Mthata on Friday, where Shakes Mashaba and Trott Moloto of the '70-'80 Legends, will also be present.

"We are using the legends to create awareness of the World Cup in the various municipalities in the Eastern Cape," said Gogo Mangoyi, the unit's strategic manager.

"We strongly believe that the legends have a massive role to play in the communities, especially when it comes to the development of the game.

"Some of the legends have been brought back into the game as development coaches through the projects of the World Cup unit.

"'Our MEC [Noxolo Abraham-Ntantiso] and the entire government have made it clear that soccer development should be one of the legacy projects of the World Cup."
