A Mpumalanga taxi driver and his two passengers appeared in the Tonga magistrate's court on a charge of smuggling goods yesterday

Elijah Mandlazi, 32, and Nigerian nationals, Uzoma Ojinaka, 34, and Mark Oswage, 39, pleaded guilty and paid admission of guilt fines of R1000 each.

They were arrested on Friday morning after they were found in possession of 14 bags of clothes from Mozambique.

Police arrested the men at Mbuzini Trust near Komatipoort.

"We were doing our rounds when we spotted a white taxi," said Mbuzini police spokesman Constable Solane Hlahla.

"We are concerned about the rise in smuggling and will arrest anyone who breaks the law."
