Two senior Mpumalanga traffic officials, who were arrested on fraud and corruption charges on Thursday, appeared in the Barberton magistrate's court on Friday.

Chief traffic inspector Enock Sifundza, 39, and traffic inspector John Mandlenkosi Thwala, 43, were not asked to plead and were released on their own recognisance.

The case was postponed to May 5.

The two were arrested following police investigations into the issuing of illegal driver's licences to applicants whose learner's licences had expired.

Police spokesman Captain Leonard Hlathi told Sowetan that the two officials were facing a total of 48 charges between them, with Thwala accused of 37 of these.
