As plans advance to stage the first Stars of Mzansi awards on Friday February 29 controversy already looms.

While debate has always surrounded the nomination of the same faces year in and year out, many approve the introduction of new categories as well as the deserving nominees this time around.

People seem to be unhappy with certain nominations, especially in the Sports Star category. The nominations, which include Bryan Habana, Makhaya Ntini, Teko Modise and Benni McCarthy, have had many people drawing the sharpest knives against McCarthy.

"What has McCarthy done to honour his country lately? When was the last time he scored a goal for Bafana Bafana?" asks the angry Vusiwe Mncwane. "Whoever nominated him clearly doesn't know that boy. Even if he does win, I doubt if he'd come running to accept it because, frankly, he knows, like we do, that he doesn't deserve it."
