Mpumalanga police have warned motorists to be extra careful when they are stopped by traffic cops following two incidents in which bogus traffic officers attacked two drivers this week.
In the latest incident, 43-year-old Griffiths Nyawe of Ogies was travelling in his Toyota minibus when two men in traffic cop uniforms stopped him at about 4.30pm.
The "officers" were travelling in a VW Golf that had a blue lamp and its siren on.
"The 'traffic cops' turned into dangerous criminals who pointed firearms at the victim and tied him up with his shoelaces," said Superintendent Abie Khoabane on Wednesday.
Nyawe was forced into a second vehicle that arrived shortly thereafter and was driven to a disused farm where he was dumped. He managed to untie himself and reported the matter to the police.
His vehicle was still missing by Wednesday afternoon and police have asked anyone with information that could help in their investigations to call their nearest police station.
In a separate incident 24 hours earlier, 37-year-old Fannie Banze was driving a Volvo truck when he was stopped by two men in traffic cop uniforms along the Ermelo-Piet Retief road at about 2pm.
Khoabane said the "cops" were driving a white Toyota Corolla and they told the victim that his truck's licence had expired.
The men forced the victim into their car where they tied his hands with shoelaces before driving with him to a nearby plantation.
"The men were joined by two others who kept guard over the victim until the following morning. After they had left he freed himself and walked back to where his truck was," said Khoabane.
He said the truck was still at the scene and it looked as if the thugs had failed to manage to drive it because the key was still in the ignition hole.
No arrests have been made and police investigations are continuing.
