Outgoing ANC Youth League president Fikile Mbalula has likened the effects of excessive drinking to HIV-Aids.
Mbalula, who spoke to the media after a meeting leaders of the South African Liquor Traders Association (Salta) in Johannesburg yesterday, said heavy drinking should come to an end.
"Alcohol has dangers in terms of healthy lifestyle. Like Aids it can kill if you abuse it," said Mbalula.
He said the league would approach Health Minister Manto Tshabalala- Msimang to consider regulating the industry.
"Alcohol abuse affects production in our country because on Sundays people drink like there is no tomorrow. It also affects thinking capacity, memory and leads to babalaas that makes people less productive.
"We have to be a productive nation. It's a narrow version that alcohol should be banned totally, but we are proposing that there should be trading hours.
"Sales should stop on Sundays because people drink like there is no tomorrow," said Mbalula.
Salta president Saint Madlala said it appeared that most people resorted to drinking on Sundays because they were off duty.
Madlala said his association had agreed to work with the ANCYL because they were also troubled by excessive drinking.
