Third seeded Thomas Johansson of Sweden breezed into the last 16 of the SAA Open when he beat local wildcard Raven Klaasen 6-2 6-4 in a thrilling tennis match at the Selborne Park Tennis Stadium in East London yesterday.

Johansson, who took his opponent lightly, almost paid dearly against the hungry and determined South African. The youngster played his heart out but was let down by silly mistakes, especially off the slice.

Klaasen was a marvel to behold early in the match, when he broke Johansson's serve. But as the match progressed he seemed to lose his composure and Johansson took control.

After the match, Johansson said he was impressed with Klaasen's performance.

"He's a talented player and he also moves well inside the court. But if he could improve his forehand and serves he can become a decent player," said Johansson.

Klaasen said: "I was not scared to play him, I was excited. I played well at some stages and slip a bit in the first set, but I enjoyed it."

Rik de Voest beat Kevin Anderson 7-6 6-4.
