Future in hands of women

Hundreds of women and dignitaries from various parts of Africa and the world are expected to attend the ninth Pan African Women's Organisation's (Pawo) Congress to be held at the Birchwood Hotel in Ekurhuleni from today until Sunday.

President Thabo Mbeki is expected to open the gathering which will also be addressed by Minister of Home Affairs Nosiviwe Maphisa-Nqakula. She is also Pawo's Southern African regional secretary and president of the ANC Women's League.

The president of the African Union Commission, Alpha Oumar Konare, and a senior member of the diplomatic body of the African group, Abdella Alzubedi, will also address the meeting.

Pawo said that more than 300 delegates from 53 countries will attend the meeting to be held under the theme: "Pawo - Shaping the Future of African Women for the 21st Century".
