Canadian superstar Celine Dion seems to have already grasped a few South African words of local slang.

The singer kept saying "eish" during a press conference at Monte Casino yesterday. She was happy to give away a few details of how she met her elderly husband, tycoon Rene Angelil.

"My mother and I were in Rene's office and he wanted to listen to my demo tape. I met him for the first time and he decided there and then that I was star material. From then on he did everything to make sure that I 'm successful," she said.

The charismatic singer has become popular over the years for songs such as Falling Into You, The Power of love, The Colour of Love.

Dion is in the country with her family, including Angelil. Her tour of the country starts tomorrow and is part of her world tour.

She will be performing at the "Unite of the Stars" charity banquet tomorrow night at the Dome in Northgate, Johannesburg, together with Grammy award-winning Soweto Gospel Choir. She will perform on Saturday and Sunday at Loftus Versveld Stadium in Pretoria, and will be in Durban next Wednesday at the Absa Stadium.

The tour takes her to the Vergelegen Wine Estate near Cape Town on February 23 and 24, and goes to Port Elizabeth on February 27 at the EPRU Stadium. Her final leg will be Monte Casino on March 1.

"I am my music and I just want to share that with South Africa. I have been listening to some South African artists such as Sibongile Khumalo and I love her sound," Dion said.

"Maybe in future I will have collaborations with a South African artist."
