SA envoys to visit China

ACCRA - South Africa may not have qualified for the Beijing Olympics in soccer in August, but the 2010 Local Organising Committee plans to send some of its personnel to China on a fact-finding mission.

The LOC's media and communications department said the Olympics is one of several global competitions they have lined up to learn more about the challenges of hosting a big sporting event that attracts many athletes, officials, journalists and spectators.

More than 500 000 people are expected in South Africa for the World Cup.

The LOC used the three-week-long Africa Cup of Nations finals, which ended on Sunday night, to create awareness of the World Cup.

There were a number of activities during the tournament where representatives of the LOC made presentations.

After the Afcon finals, the LOC will be sending people to the 2008 Euro Cup finals to be co-hosted by Austria and Switzerland in June. This includes World Cup volunteers
