From next month Limpopo's traditional healers will be more equipped to deal with managing and preventing the spread of HIV-Aids.
One thousand healers from around the province were selected to undergo a comprehensive HIV and Aids care course and management and treatment training.
The healers, from the five districts of the province, will be trained in courses relating to the epidemic of HIV, the human body and the effects of the virus, palliative care and nutrition in HIV. They will also be trained on HIV and pregnancy, the prevention of HIV, the impact of HIV on families, vulnerable groups, the stigma associated with HIV, and HIV and Aids as a human rights issue.
The training begins today and will be held at the Modjadji Technical College and Nchebeko Skills Consultancy in Ga-Kgapane township near Modjadjiskloof.
Chief executive of the college, Simon Mabelane, said the training was a joint venture with the provincial department of health and social development in Limpopo.
The programme is in line with the national department of health and government's aim to make sure that community leaders lend a helping hand to control and manage the spread of the HI virus.
Meanwhile, a number of lay counsellors from Vhembe and Capricorn will undergo the same training on Monday for three weeks.
Both the counsellors and healers will be awarded accredited certificates that will enable them to work in primary healthcare centres and clinics in the province.
Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang called upon traditional healers last week to join hands with the government in the fight against the spread of HIV-Aids.
Tshabalala-Msimang made the call to hundreds of traditional healers in Cape Town last week.
