Hip-hop star Dr Dre has launched a legal bid to view documents belonging to his former Death Row Records label in a dispute over unpaid royalties.

Dre filed legal papers in Los Angeles.

The US bankruptcy court last week requested the now defunct label to hand over contracts and other documents to help determine the total amount owed to Dre since the label filed for bankruptcy in 2006.

Dre started the label with music mogul Marion "Suge" Knight in 1991, but sold his 50 percent share in the company in 1996. - Wenn
