Development centre for Alex

ACCRA - Johannesburg's sprawling Alexandra township will also directly benefit from the 2010 World Cup with the construction of a development centre by the Federation of International Football Associations (Fifa).

Alain Leblang, Fifa's 2010 World Cup media chief in South Africa, said his organisation would build 20 Football for Hope centres in major cities on the African continent as part of the legacy projects for the tournament.

Other cities that are expected to benefit include Bamako, Cairo, Dakar and Abidjan.

Fifa president Sepp Blatter and his executive are planning to raise $10 million (about R80 million) to fund the construction of the facilities, which will be known as "20 Centres for 2010". Alexandra will be one of the five centres in South Africa.

The areas where the other four centres will be built are still to be made public.

According to Fifa, each centre will have a mini pitch, classrooms and healthcare facilities that will also provide a platform for the participating youths to play and have access to counseling, health and education services.

Danny Jordaan said they were excited that other African countries will also benefit from the tournament.
