Beware of visa fraud

MJK Work Abroad Agency is "definitely running an employment scam" and it is using the name of the British High Commission in vain.

MJK Work Abroad Agency is "definitely running an employment scam" and it is using the name of the British High Commission in vain.

Last week Consumer Line published an article about the woes of Melda van Wyk, who used their services to obtain a visa.

She paid R11000 for a visa and her airfare.

Van Wyk could not stop crying on Friday when Consumer Line told her the British High Commission has denied having received her money from MJK Work Abroad, nor did it have any dealings with the company.

It was advertised that MJK could get her a visa within four weeks so she could work overseas.

She paid R5000 for MJK to process her application.

She received calls from the company and was encouraged to buy her air ticket through MJK.

Trusting that the process was nearing completion Van Wyk paid them R6000 for her air fare.

"When I phone they tell me they will collect my visa from the British Embassy the following day. The days have turned into seven months."

Khanyisile Ntuli of MJK denied they were running an employment scam.

Apsara McNaught of the British High Commission in Pretoria said the company in question is clearly running a scam. McNaught gave the following visa application process for the British High Commission.

l In South Africa, the British High Commission operates in partnership with a private company, Visa Facilitation Services (VFS), only.

l VFS operates UK visa application centres in Pretoria, Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban

l All visa applicants are required to attend a VFS office in person to submit their own application.

l It is impossible for anyone else to submit an application on your behalf, so be suspicious of anyone who offers to submit a visa application for you.

l The only money that you need to pay is the visa fee.

Be suspicious of anyone charging you over the odds

l No one can guarantee the outcome of a visa application.
