A Limpopo ANC ward councillor is fighting for his life in hospital after surviving a hail of bullets from a lone gunman.

The incident happened in Vuwane township near Thohoyandou yesterday morning.

The victim, Alpheus Mulandane, 54, was shot in the chest, neck and hand.

He was taken to the Tshilidzini Hospital where he is in the intensive care unit.

Sources from the village told Sowetan that Mulandane had enemies in the village who "always bayed for his blood".

"He was recently involved in a public spat with someone who accused him of failing to speed up service delivery," said a source.

"Though he was always thinking on his feet and had the interests of the community at heart, some people who did not like him were always vilifying him and calling him names," said the source.

The gun-wielding suspect, who is known to the community, kicked open the door of Mulandane's house while he was asleep, police said.

On entering the house, the man allegedly started shooting randomly.

Mulandane apparently hid behind a door to escape the hail of bullets but he was shot several times in the chest, neck and hand.

Doctors described his condition as stable.

Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba said the suspect fled with Mulandane's cellphone.

"We have opened an attempted murder docket and hope to make an arrest soon," he said.
