The ANC is throwing in its lot to support the drive by both Eskom and government to reduce electricity consumption in the country.

Eskom and government aim to reduce electricity consumption by 10percent following the energy crisis that resulted in massive power cuts.

Yesterday the ANC said it would launch a nationwide energy efficiency campaign spearheaded by its members and structures.

"The campaign will see every member of the ANC embarking on a door-to-door community awareness exercise, encouraging all South Africans to save electricity," the ANC said.

The party said those involved in the campaign would be provided with pamphlets outlining energy saving measures.

On Monday Public Enterprises Minister Alec Erwin said more efficient use of energy should result in a year-on-year growth of between 3,6percent and 4,1percent.

He said the electricity emergency plan was working and had resulted in a significant decrease in demand.

The minister said discussions with the mining industry were continuing to see if the 90 percent capacity they were operating on could be increased.
