Students at the Durban University of Technology are once again demonstrating about legitimate grievances.

It was the same situation at the university last year.

If the management had vision, we would not be in this predicament again. But because there is lack of direction and leadership for long-term solutions, we are back where we were last year.

Student leaders are always available to meet the university's management to find a workable solution. But the management decided to charge the SRC and ended up suspending its members for merely raising issues.

This apartheid-style intimidation will be totally rejection by our students.

We regret that the university has been closed until this week because that leads to unnecessary delay in the academic programme.

But we remain firm that the demands and concerns raised by our students are legitimate. Students are asking for an opportunity to complete their degrees and then they will be able to pay back their debt to the university. It is not true that students do not want to pay their fees.

The vice chancellor and his management called in the security forces, who acted like apartheid-era security branch members. They brutally assaulted and tear gassed the students.

We call on students and parents to intensify the strike.
